During the Pleistocene, mountain glaciers formed on all the continents and vast glaciers, in places as much as several thousand feet thick, spread across North America and Eurasia. In the eastern U. That is, land which had been raised. The wave ended in the Artic Ocean. Had there been an ice cap covering the northern parts of Asia, these waters could not have rolled north, they would be running uphill; neither were the mountains which now intersect the land in all directions, in existence then, because the waters would have been unable to pass them. This Asiatic phenomena shows that, over one-half of the Northern parts of the Northern Hemisphere, water and ice rolled in a southerly direction and over the opposite parts of the Northern Hemisphere a wave, of water only, passed over the land, going in a northerly direction. The word “elk” in North American English refers to a completely different species of deer, the Cervus canadensis, also called the wapiti. A mature male moose is called a bull, a mature female a cow, and an immature moose of either sex a calf. The word “elk” originated in Proto-Germanic , from which Old English evolved and has cognates in other Indo-European languages , e. The word “moose” had first entered English by and is borrowed from the Algonquian languages compare the Narragansett moos and Eastern Abenaki mos; according to early sources, these were likely derived from moosu, meaning “he strips off” , and possibly involved forms from multiple languages mutually reinforcing one another.
The youngest bones were found in Scotland and are roughly 3, years old. The British began colonizing America in the 17th century, and found two common species of deer for which they had no names. The wapiti appeared very similar to the red deer of Europe which itself was almost extinct in Southern Britain although it was much larger and was not red. In the early days of American colonization, the wapiti was often called a grey moose and the moose was often called a black moose, but early accounts of the animals varied wildly, adding to the confusion.
Early European explorers in North America, particularly in Virginia where there were no moose, called the wapiti “elk” because of its size and resemblance to familiar-looking deer like the red deer.

Aaron I thought the Idaho Hunter’s comment about nature can’t be in balance unless humans hunt was quite amusing seeing as though elk, deer, or whatever big game animal you are hunting was being preyed on by the wolves long before Europeans knew that there was land out west. I also would rather see wolves running free and hunters upset about less game because now-a-days how many people really are subsistence hunters?
I understand the ranchers concerns but hunters I do not agree with at all they can put they’re guns away and go out with a camera and shoot nature that way. The other thing that bugs me is how hunters would want to shoot this animal. It has such great family ties and packs are very close knit and to say animals don’t have feelings is just wrong. These wolf families are closer and more loving then most human families. I have always wondered how Colorado managed to dodge the wolf bullet!
Seems they have an elk overpopulation problem, one which couldn’t be solved by adding another hunting season by shortening the established seasons – in the end they only sold more licenses, and harvested less elk. Now that’s managing for the people! Glad well not really to hear the wolf is making its way there- if Colo.

The local origin of the raw material could also be demonstrated for the Krems-Wachtberg objects. On the basis of the lowered porosity of the ‘ceramics’ compared with the silt loams, Vandiver et al. Moulding The mixture of silt loam and water was shaped by kneading the material into a particular shape. Sometimes material was added and rolled and pressed together Soffer and Vandiver , The figurines are all modelled as three-dimensional forms for which an additive process was followed.
There is little evidence of smoothing the surface. In a few instances, decorations and other incisions were observed. Only the most telling details, in particular on the animal heads, are indicated. In general however there is only minimal detailing. There is no evidence for post-firing modification of the surface by the application of pigments or burnishing. The Firing Process The ‘ceramics’ range in colours from tan to grey and black or, less frequently, to orange and red.
Judging from the grey and black colours, the majority of the ‘ceramics’ were fired in a reducing environment. A minority was fired in an oxidizing environment. The presence of siliceous ash on the outside of the figurines indicates that ‘either they were set in the fuel which then burned to ash or that they were surrounded in a protective ash layer during the firing’ Vandiver et al.

Besides producing dramatic shifts in the alignment of the prairie-forest border, the Atlantic climatic episode caused many other changes in the distribution, density, and composition of plant and animal communities. These changes profoundly affected human adaptations in the state. During much of this period, the vast ocean of prairie that covered all but the northeastern corner of the state presented a startling contrast to the boreal vegetation present at B. Few, if any, spruce trees that once covered the state, remained in northeastern Minnesota, and oak-shrub vegetation extended northwestward along the prairie-forest border.
Undoubtedly, animal communities suited to these zones of vegetation were present, too, for Figure 3.
